Downtown Plaza Trash Enclosure
Project Background
The Beermann Plaza serves as a hub for local events and supports a vibrant, business friendly environment. However, when the Plaza was originally designed, the long-term thought process of garbage collection and future regulatory requirements were not primary considerations. Today, waste is collected from more than 25 nearby businesses at this location.
With the implementation of new regulations, such as mandatory food waste separation, identifying adequate space for organics containers has been an ongoing concern for downtown businesses. Waste volumes have also increased alongside business growth, creating additional demand for service.
Proposed
Staff proposes the construction of a new trash and organics enclosure within the Plaza.
The proposed enclosure is designed to:
- Accommodate several solid waste bins and multiple organics toters;
- Feature brick walls and surrounding shrubbery to complement the architecture of the former City Hall building (now the City Museum);
- Occupy a section of the existing plaza footprint in an area determined to be least impactful to event operations and pedestrian access
Staff conducted multiple site visits and met with affected business owners to review the concept design and gather input on operational considerations and aesthetics.
