Hometown Heroes

Hometown Heroes Banner Program

The City of Lincoln is excited to introduce the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, giving the community an opportunity to honor Lincoln residents and their immediate family members who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.

These banners will be proudly displayed on City-owned streetlight poles on Lincoln Boulevard and McBean Park Drive contributing to the city's sense of pride and enriching the local community atmosphere.

Eligibility

Honorees must have served (or currently serve) in one of the U.S. Armed Forces branches- Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard- and may be active duty, honorably discharged, retired, or deceased.

To qualify, nominees must meet one of the criteria:

  • Be a current City of Lincoln resident.
  • Have graduated from a high school in Lincoln.

Required Documentation

  • Proof of residency (i.e. a copy of utility bill or driver’s license), or high school transcript.
  • Verification of active duty dates (i.e. copy of military orders, military ID, DD214, or death certificate).
  • Honorable discharge or retirement papers with SSN redacted.
  • High-Resolution digital image (minimum 300 dpi) in jpeg format or 5 x 7 photograph of honoree in official uniform (with no objects). Original photos will be returned.

Proof of eligibility will be required before an application is considered complete.

Banner Locations

The City has designated 28 light poles on Lincoln Boulevard and McBean Park Drive for this program.

Available space and banner placement are on a first-come, first-served basis among qualified applicants.

 If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of banner spaces, they will be rolled into the following year for placement (a waiting list will be established). All banner locations shall be determined solely by the City.

Display Period

  • The banners will be displayed for a maximum of 12 months, or until the banner starts to show deterioration.
  • At the end of the display period, banners will be offered to families/applicants. Any unclaimed banners within 30 days will become City property and may be disposed of.
  • At the end of 12 months, if space allows, the family/applicant can request to have their banner remain up for an additional fee.

Banner Style

The specifications and design of the banner are at the sole discretion of the City and can be modified at any time. Banners are:

  • Commercial grade vinyl, double-sided
  • 30” x 60”
  • Two fiberglass mounting brackets for each banner

Sponsorship and Cost

  • Banners may be sponsored by individuals or organizations.
  • The cost of each banner is $218.00 and is subject to change based on City costs.
  • The Hometown Hero banner application may be obtained from the City of Lincoln’s website.
  • Applications are accepted on a year-round basis. Banners will be put up at the sole discretion of the the City and will be based on the availability of City Staff, resources, and staff scheduling for installation and removal.
  • In order for an application to be considered complete, all supporting documentation must be received and verified by the City.
  • Full payment for the banner must be received by the City.
  • Applicants will be notified by City staff once an installation date has been determined.

Waiver and Limitations

  • The City of Lincoln is not responsible for replacing banners that are stolen, damaged or destroyed due to age, vandalism, or acts of nature including high winds.
  • If the banner is damaged, the applicant has 15 days to provide payment for another banner. If not received during this timeframe they waive their application.
  • Any loss or damage to an installed banner will be handled at the discretion of the City.
  • The City reserves the right to not install a banner if the requirements of this banner program are not met.

Application and Payment Procedure

Applications are available on the City’s website or by contacting hometownheroes@lincolnca.gov to have an application mailed to you.
