What is FOG?

The acronym “FOG” stands for Fats, Oils, Grease, and refers to the remanence of certain food debris that lingers after cooking in the kitchen and has the potential to clog your sewer pipes. FOG also brings up the important subject matter of how to properly dispose of these ingredients after whipping up a yummy meal.

What are you supposed to do with FOG?

Dumping your FOG down the sink eventually leads to a thick build up in your home’s sewer system, which can clog your sewer pipes. These clogs can lead to sewage backing up inside your home or on your property. Not only does this create an enormous stinky mess, but it’s also very costly and time-consuming. The best way to dispose of your FOG is to save it in a sealable, non-breakable container and have the City come pick it up right from your front doorstep.

What is an acceptable FOG container?

FOG is accepted when placed in a sealable, non-breakable container. Some examples include: an old coffee can with lid, a milk jug, or a simple ziplock bag. We just ask that the FOG be placed in a container that's sealed and non-breakable. This helps us ensure a safe transport of the material to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

FREE Doorstep Pick-up!

Do you have a container of FOG ready for disposal? Then look no further. The City of Lincoln provides a complimentary service to residents that include doorstep pickup of your FOG disposals. FOG pick-up will be available to customers each Wednesday but requires an appointment to be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
